For UZ Leuven, a production pharmacy with a gross floor area of 2,800 m² was constructed in a shell building, including a technical room of 2,800 m² on the floor above. The project includes GMP-certified cleanrooms (Classes B, C, and D) for sterile and non-sterile preparations, cytostatics, and clinical trials, featuring isolators, robots, and specific safety measures for toxic substances—fully compliant with the updated PIC/S guidelines through an Engineering & Build approach.
A new manufacturing pharmacy in accordance with the updated PIC/S guidelines
In a shell building, UZ Leuven is constructing a production pharmacy with a gross floor area of 2,800 m² . A technical room measuring 2,800 m² is being provided on the floor above.
This manufacturing facility must comply with the updated PIC/S guidelines, which will become legally mandatory as of January 2026. Due to the tight timeline, UZ Leuven has opted for an Engineering & Built approach.
The production pharmacy has several cleanrooms classified as GMP Class B, C, and D. The project includes numerous isolators, robots, biosafety cabinets, and powder cabinets, and since toxic substances are handled in various rooms, appropriate safety measures are required. The production pharmacy manufactures both sterile and non-sterile preparations; it features a cleanroom dedicated to cytostatic drugs, as well as cleanrooms designated for clinical trials.
Ingenium and an architect as the inspection team
Ingenium is responsible for drafting the performance specifications and quality requirements for HVAC, plumbing, gas systems, WFI (water for injection), and electrical systems. The architectural firm Felix & Partners works as a subcontractor for Ingenium and is responsible for the architectural design. During construction, Ingenium and Felix & Partners act as the inspection team on behalf of the client.
