Construction of the new Sint-Maarten Hospital began in 2013 near the Mechelen ring road. Ingenium was responsible for the design and on-site supervision of the hospital’s entire technical infrastructure.

AZ Sint-Maarten is part of the non-profit organization Emmaüs. More than 5,000 people work at Emmaüs’s more than 20 healthcare facilities. The technical design of this building, which has approximately 750 beds, is guided by a clear vision of sustainability and functionality.

Ingenium was responsible for the design and on-site supervision of the hospital’s entire technical infrastructure. We draw on our own expertise and know-how in the hospital sector to provide the client with intensive support. This approach allowed us to make the best possible decisions regarding comfort, budget, and desired functionality. To implement these decisions, a team of specialists was available in the fields of HVAC, Electrical Systems, High Voltage, Medical Gases, Plumbing, Communications, and Energy. The medical-technical wing of the hospital includes, among other things, 14 operating rooms, an outpatient treatment center, an intensive care unit with high-care bays, an outpatient clinic, isolation rooms, medical imaging facilities, and an emergency department.

Ingenium designed all the technical systems, including the large-scale heating and cooling systems for the hospital. A total of 240 BEO boreholes, each 105 meters deep (borehole energy storage, shallow geothermal energy), were drilled and combined with a number of heat pumps to ensure that the hospital can be heated and cooled in a highly energy-efficient manner. The ground functions as a seasonal thermal buffer, with excess heat generated by the hospital’s cooling systems in the summer being stored in the ground. In the following winter, this heat can be efficiently reused to heat the buildings with the help of the heat pumps.
