In Oudergem, near the E411, stands the newly built CHIREC Delta Hospital, with a floor area of 104,000 m² and approximately 600 beds. CHIREC, which operates six campuses in Brussels, selected an integrated design team in 2009 consisting of ASSAR (architecture), Ingenium (specialized engineering), SNC, and GREISCH (structural engineering). The hospital opened in 2017 and combines an outpatient center, a large medical-technical platform with 28 operating rooms (ISO 5 and ISO 7), medical imaging, chemotherapy, endoscopy, two bunkers, intensive care, an emergency department, and patient rooms.

High standards

New hospital construction places high demands on operational reliability, comfort, and budget control. At the same time, buildings must remain flexible to accommodate future changes in care processes and technological advancements. This requires an integrated design in which architecture, structural engineering, and building systems work closely together from the very beginning.

CHIREC Delta was developed using a MOI (Multiple Client Instrument) approach, in which the design team bore full responsibility for budget control, scheduling, and technical quality. Within this team, Ingenium served as the engineering firm for the special engineering systems and ensured a rational approach to design decisions through Total Cost of Ownership analyses and a Whole System-oriented approach.

Integrated Design

The design of the technical systems aligns with the hospital’s architectural and functional layout. A central powerhouse located outside the building houses the main systems for power, climate control, and utilities. This separation enhances operational reliability and provides space for maintenance and expansions without disrupting patient care. Intelligent redundancy ensures continuity in the event of malfunctions or maintenance: systems are duplicated where necessary, but without unnecessary overcapacity.

Sustainable techniques

For climate control, heating, and cooling, a combination of a ground-source heat storage system ( BTES ), solar thermal collectors, cogeneration, and high-performance hybrid chillers was selected. This mix makes the hospital energy-efficient without compromising comfort or reliability. Ingenium carried out the sizing, system integration, and seasonal optimization to ensure the building performs optimally in both summer and winter.

In addition to design and engineering, Ingenium provided consulting services and drafted the maintenance contract to ensure the facilities’ performance is maintained throughout their entire lifespan. The result is a hospital that serves as an international benchmark for integrated design, operational reliability, and sustainable building technologies.
