AZ Sint-Lucas Ghent - New Building Block W
The new Block W building is part of the master plan of AZ Sint Lucas that has been in progress since 1998. The master plan came about as a result of the merger of 2 adjacent hospitals in the heart of downtown Ghent (AZ Sint-Vincentius and AZ H. Familie). From 2004, the master plan was adapted and the merger of the Volkskliniek was also integrated on the campus.

AZ Sint-Lucas Ghent - New Building Block W

Ingenium has been involved in the master plan of AZ Sint-Lucas for more than 20 years and conducted several feasibility studies, looking for an optimal energy concept for heating, cooling and the hospital's electrical power supply.
As of 2020, hospital functions are completely gone from the Volkskliniek campus that will make way for a new residential care center. The last major phase in the master plan was completed, which meant that the last services from the Volkskliniek could soon move out. This phase included the construction of a new wing "Block W." This new building on the corner of Sint-Margrietstraat and Groenebriel houses:
- The day hospitals internal, oncology and surgery
- Geriatrics with day hospital and consultations
- Pain clinic, infusion therapy, ophthalmology and hand center SP chronic
- Palliative care
- Surgical day hospital and operating theater
The first services already moved into the new wing in June 2019.
Ingenium was responsible for the feasibility study, the design of the technical systems (including medical gases), EPB and the site follow-up of the techniques in Block W. The wing was designed in such a way that all spaces can be used flexibly. This means that only a minimum of works are required to redevelop spaces. This is made possible by intelligently implanting technical spaces and ducts. Due to the scope of the master plan, the limitation of public funds in the sector and the phased move-in, planning and budget control are also crucial in this project. Transparent communication between the various parties is the key to success here. Here Ingenium strictly monitors the budget and ensures a close follow-up of the planning where sufficient space is always provided for checking and testing the installed systems. This is important to guarantee reliability and comfort for the patient and user.
