Energy policy City-Ghent Energy study Campus PC Dr. Guislain
The Dr. Guislain Psychiatric Center campus in Ghent is a historic site with a diverse mix of old and new buildings, varying in use, age and energy performance. Current energy efficiency is low andCO2 emissions from heating are high.
Commissioned by the City of Ghent and Care Group Guislain, a long-term vision was developed to heat the site fossil-free, improve indoor comfort and increase renewable energy production. This took into account the heritage value of the buildings and the technical possibilities for, among other things, roof and wall insulation, improvement of joinery and optimization of airtightness.
The master plan examines several scenarios, including sewage heat in combination with BEO fields or air-water heat pumps, and proposes a phased sustainability of the heat grid:
1. Renovating and lowering the heating line.
2. Decoupling domestic hot water via booster heat pumps
3. Replacement of CHPs with riothermal.
4. Phasing out gas boilers in favor of air-water heat pumps
It also identified the potential for additional PV installations, amply meeting legal obligations. The study takes into account EPCNR targets, legal obligations and avoidance of lock-in effects.
The goal is to make the buildings ready for the next 50 years, with an interim step toward 2035 in which significantCO2 reductions are already being realized.
