Budget techniques
Constructiv implemented an integrated comfort and lighting system in which climate control and lighting control are managed not as separate systems, but as two functions of the same infrastructure. With a single bGrid node per room, full room control is achieved through a single measurement and a single cabling system.
Constructiv, Brussels — climate and lighting from a single node
Constructiv and EEG opted for a solution in which climate control and lighting management are not treated as two separate systems, but as two functions of the same infrastructure. bGrid supplied the Smart Comfort Controller (BSCC) in combination with the bGrid multisensor for lighting management—together providing a comprehensive room control system, which was installed and commissioned by EEG.
One measurement, two media
At least one bGrid node is installed in each room. It measures occupancy and motion, air temperature and humidity, light intensity, and air quality. The same measurement feeds two control systems simultaneously. The BSCC translates the actual room demand into a setpoint and damper position for controlling the climate ceiling, air handling units, and/or ventilation. The demand is transmitted via BACnet to the Schneider primary controller; the lighting is switched and dimmed directly via DALI based on the same occupancy and daylight measurements. Additionally, bGrid adjusts the sunshades for an optimal experience and energy efficiency.
The difference from a conventional solution lies in what does not need to be installed. No separate lighting controller, no second set of occupancy sensors, no individual switches, and no separate bus for the lighting system. One node, one cabling run, one commissioning.
Ingenium's Challenge and Role
The challenge was to design an infrastructure that eliminates two separate systems without sacrificing functionality or control.
Ingenium handled the engineering for this integrated node approach, in which:
- A single cabling infrastructure supports both systems
- The topology is automatically detected
- On-site commissioning is performed using LED monitoring
- The nightly validation process is fully automated
- Future updates can be implemented remotely
What that means at the shipyard
For EEG as an installer, this is primarily an implementation advantage. The nodes are located on the luminaire wiring, which significantly reduces the cable infrastructure. This also applies to the BSCC. Every room is set up the same way—nothing is engineered or configured twice. The BSCC recognizes the topology and is self-learning in its control functions. Commissioning is performed using an on-site LED check, after which the building is automatically validated overnight. This saves time per control loop and eliminates most of the risk of failure during handover.
What that means after completion
Constructiv ensures that a building remains manageable and expandable at the space level. New functionality is delivered via a remote update—without on-site visits, without disrupting users, and without additional integrations. If the building’s layout or use changes, the remote recommissioning process can be run again.
Techniques Used
- bGrid Smart Comfort Controller (BSCC) – Converts space demand into setpoints for climate ceilings, dampers, and ventilation
- bGrid Multisensor – Measures the following in a single node: presence, motion, temperature, humidity, light, and air quality
- DALI Control – Lighting and dimming controlled directly via the same measurement
- BACnet Communication – Transmission of Climate Data to Schneider Pre-control
- Automatic Sunshades – Optimized Based on the Same Sensor Data
- Self-learning system – BSCC recognizes topology and automatically learns control parameters
- One node, one cable —No duplicate components, no redundant configuration
- Remote update functionality – Recommissioning and modifications can be performed remotely
