KUL teaching and research building - Ter Groene Poorte campus

In September 2016, KU Leuven built a new university campus in Bruges.

KULAB (=new campus) refers to the "lab" environment in which the technology program is located. Spread over 12,000 m² , the new building will offer academic programs: Industrial Sciences & Technology and Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Sciences. The design is part of a master plan for the entire "Ter Groene Poorte" site, which adds structure to the campus by introducing a new esplanade that strings the various buildings together.

The new building is integrally sustainable by applying a good compactness and a thorough thermal performance outer shell. The heat loads are passively kept at bay by means of mobile exterior sun blinds. The floor-to-ceiling windows also ensure optimal use of natural light in all accommodation rooms. Separate ventilation groups are assigned for the laboratory clusters so that no contamination can occur with the ventilation air from other usage areas such as cafeteria, office spaces, auditorium or seminar rooms. Where possible as a function of hygiene requirements, a heat wheel is used. If this is not possible, heat recovery via batteries is used, for example for the laboratory environment. All high-occupancy classrooms will also be demand-controlled, thus realizing additional savings in terms of electricity, heat and cold generation.
