Barracks Dossin
Kazerne Dossin underwent a thorough facelift to become a full-fledged memorial on the Holocaust.
The Flemish Government wanted to realize a project for a memorial, museum and documentation center on Holocaust and human rights at Kazerne Dossin and its surroundings in Mechelen. The choice of site was not arbitrary. In the Kazerne Dossin - during World War II - Jews and Gypsies were gathered to be transported to the concentration camps by train. The building is protected as a monument and currently furnished with apartments, the city archive and the Jewish Museum of Deportation and Resistance. It is the latter association that is a user of the completed project. The part of the barracks used by this association underwent a thorough renovation. This part now mainly houses the administrative services. The air-conditioned archives have also found their place here. On the opposite side of the Barracks, on the site of the former city jail, the new Holocaust Museum has been built. The basement houses a cafeteria, and the ground floor is a space for temporary exhibitions. On the upper floors, the route of the permanent exhibition is laid out. Finally, on the roof floor, a reflection room and a small auditorium are planned.
Ingenium was charged with the realization of the techniques, taking into account the polyvalent character of the room and the aesthetic integration of the techniques in the building, in order to do full justice to the sober character of the rooms. For this project, Ingenium was also responsible for drawing up and following up the building's maintenance contract for one year. For more information, please visit: www.kazernedossin.be
