Project in the spotlight: Technicum, the new faculty of political and social sciences at UGent

Ghent University's faculty of political and social sciences recently moved into the Technicum, located in Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat between the UFO and the student restaurant De Brug.

Assignment

Ingenium determined the technical concept in preliminary design, worked out a complete competition dossier and assisted the client in supervising the construction site.

The project is linked to the available heat network of SPE, Luminus which was also previously responsible for heating the buildings. The bulk of the dispensing units are radiators that were judiciously installed with respect for the heritage value.

The building is intensively ventilated where the air flow rate is demand controlled. The air groups are also equipped with heat wheels to recover heat from the extraction air to preheat the fresh air.

Integration

It was important for Ingenium to subtly integrate the new techniques into the existing historic building while respecting its authenticity. After all, Technicum is a building from the 1930s, where people used to do concrete research. The large crane in the reading room preserves this memory.

Eye-catchers in the building are the faculty library with study areas and beautiful reading room, the classrooms and the stairwell.
