In Antwerp, BlueApp is located on the Blue Gate Antwerp site. This site is the country's first water-bound business park that is circular and eco-effective. Innovation and sustainable chemistry come together here.
The BlueApp building is a pre-incubator for the University of Antwerp and connects academia with industry. Among other things, BlueApp collaborates intensively with the start-ups of BlueChem, the first incubator in Belgium that focuses on innovation and entrepreneurship in sustainable chemistry through multidisciplinary collaboration.BlueApp provides a physical location where state-of-the-art infrastructure, including analytical instruments and pilot facilities, technical personnel and expertise are brought together and offered to researchers and industry.The building is equipped with a duplex demonstration hall, three lab floors with enclosed office areas and a technical floor. The laboratories are suitable for the preparation, handling and analysis of (bio)materials, gases and liquids.
On the one hand, applied research is conducted here together with industrial partners, and on the other hand, products and processes are developed to reach a licensing or investment agreement. The total area of the building is 4,850 m² of which 2,500 m² lab space. The project was completed in September 2022.Flexibility and sustainability were central to the concept, without sacrificing the safety requirements inherent in a building with chemical laboratories.
Ingenium was responsible for the design and follow-up of the technical systems. In addition, the EPB advice and reporting, the guidance in the BREEAM process and the complete commissioning assignment were also carried out by Ingenium. The commissioning process was based on 3 pillars:
Test scenarios were prepared according to the ASHRAE Guidelines. Fire scenarios, Blackbuilding tests, building management system tests and safety tests, among others, were performed. Overarching tests, which check the interaction between different techniques, were also performed. All necessary steps for BREEAM accreditation were included in this procedure.
