Thorpark Genk - engineering study heat grid
The Thorpark science park is a sustainable technology campus in full development on the old Waterschei mining site in Genk. On this campus, a collective system of cold and heat storage (ATES) is planned for the buildings yet to be realized. This system will allow heat and cold to be exchanged between the buildings, surplus heat to be stored in the groundwater in the summer (thus cooling the buildings in an energy-efficient way) and this heat can then be used in the winter to heat the buildings using a heat pump.

Thor Park also features a number of already completed buildings. Thor Central is the impressive, recently renovated heritage heart of the old mine site. It includes a business & facility center and an urban meeting center. IncubaThor is a recent building and designed as a service platform for companies. At the request of POM Limburg, Ingenium is investigating whether ThorCentral and IncubaThor could be connected to the planned collective ATES network on the site. This is done on the basis of a thorough energetic analysis of the buildings, a hydraulic and technical analysis of the buildings' current heating and cooling systems and an economic analysis of the necessary adaptation works. The role that the ATES network can play for the buildings and the role that the buildings can play for the ATES network are being thoroughly investigated. The chalk lines for the adaptations to the building installations are examined and plotted. Then, in collaboration with partner IFTech, Ingenium examines the implantation of the ATES-source pairs near the existing buildings based on a geohydrological study and the hydraulic configuration of the ATES-net is evaluated.
