Brussels Airport: Fossil-Fuel-Free Heating Plant and Heating Network Renovation

Brussels Airport Company is modernizing its heating infrastructure to become completely fossil-free by 2030: Ingenium is supporting the entire process—from studies, design, and environmental permitting to construction supervision—for a new 21 MW heating plant equipped with heat pumps, electric boilers, and a buffer system, as well as the renovation of the entire heating network. This ambitious energy project will result in a drastic reduction in CO2 emissions from the building portfolio by 2029.

Brussels Airport: Fossil-Fuel-Free Heating Plant and Heating Network Renovation

Brussels Airport aims to be "Net Zero Carbon" by 2030. For the heating of all existing and new buildings, this means a highly ambitious transition to completely fossil-free heat production.

The airport currently has a fossil-fuel-fired district heating network that supplies most of the heat for the departure and arrival halls, all terminals, office buildings, logistics facilities, aircraft hangars, and more. Ingenium, together with Signum+ Architecten Robuust, was commissioned by Brussels Airport Company to prepare all studies, the design, the environmental permit, and the tender documents, as well as to provide construction supervision for:

• The building and all technical systems of the fully fossil-free heating plant

• The renovation and optimization of the district heating network

• The renovation and standardization of all substations in the district heating network, enabling a reduction in the network’s operating temperature. The fossil-fuel-free heating plant, with a capacity of approximately 21 MW, consists of a combination of large-scale heat pumps, electric boilers, and a large thermal storage tank.

The entire project is currently in the preliminary design phase. By 2029, the completion of this unique energy infrastructure will result in a significant reduction in CO2 emissions from the buildings at Brussels Airport.

Ingenium is responsible for project coordination, preparing feasibility and design studies for all technical systems, providing input for the environmental permit application, drafting the design and tender documents, overseeing the tendering process, supervising construction, and managing the handover process.
