SvM - The Labyrinth and the Winged Ghent

This D&B project concerns a new construction of a secondary school in Ghent with class and subject rooms, refectory, multipurpose room and technical room and a sports hall. In addition, the project provides for the construction of environmental works including a covered playground, an open playground, a bicycle shed. From an energy point of view, we initially sought to optimize the building's envelope. Through a well-considered design, we were able to create a high-performance shell, which limits the energy requirements as much as possible. This was achieved by building compact, determining an optimal glass surface area, thorough insulation and attention to the detailing of the nodes, as well as the choice of efficient sun blinds for east, south and west orientations.

By creating a high-performance envelope, we can greatly reduce the energy demand for cooling and heating, even to the extent that acceptable comfort was created without the application of active cooling. School buildings are characterized by significant electricity consumption because of the energy for lighting and ventilation. A PV system should also generate the necessary free power here, in order to reduce these auxiliary currents to the maximum extent possible. In terms of K and E levels, the building scores K25 - E62.
