Building physics and dynamic simulations

The fact that a beautiful design also performs maximally in terms of energy after the actual realization is not always evident in practice. That is why Ingenium Building Physics & Simulations provides an optimization of the building in the design phase. With simulations in the field of energy, daylight and thermal comfort, solutions are proposed that are aesthetically and energetically effective.

Simulations are often used at the earliest stages of a building project, when initial ideas are taking shape. This is particularly useful because the orientation of a building can be crucial to its subsequent energy performance. Simulations are also used further along in the process until the design is complete.

Simulations are also a useful tool for existing buildings. The energy consumptions from the new design model are then compared with the current situation. Based on dynamic simulations of the various parameters, optimizations are proposed to reduce energy consumption. Because daylighting, thermal comfort and energy consumption influence each other, this is not possible with the classical static method of analysis.

Simulation software is also used in the context of EPB certification and for calculating building nodes in the structure of the building. Especially in renovations and energy audits of existing buildings and real estate heritage, it is important to correctly estimate the building physics consequences of certain energy interventions - such as the risk of condensation with interior insulation - in advance.

Ingenium always tries to avoid the application of áctive cooling by providing alternatives that are more energy-friendly and sustainable. Summer comfort simulation is therefore standard in every project. For extensive projects or the achievement of a BREEAM label, the simulations can be extended as desired.

We also collaborate on policy studies commissioned by governments. Among other things, we used our knowledge and expertise to develop EPB evaluation tools that are usable and effective.
