"Over the Ring" Antwerp - energy vision

Commissioned by the City of Antwerp, Ingenium examined, in collaboration with Agence TER, TVK, Arcadis and Atelier Horizon, what role the future Ring projects could play in the Antwerp energy story.

The study describes a concept for energy in, under and along the Ring Road, and lays down concrete preconditions and guidelines for the elaboration of the various Ring Road projects. It provides a clear framework for investments, design and management choices for the coming decades with regard to energy transport, storage and production.

Main focus of Ingenium was the Ring as Heat Transport Corridor to link the various heat sources around the City (port, incinerators, WWTPs, industry,...) to the various heat consumers (existing and new district heat networks, large building complexes) in and around the inner city and surrounding districts. This involved extensive use of GIS software to study the Heat Transport Corridor route through the city and proper location of the heat pipes in the Ring Landscape.

Ingenium then drafted the spatial boundary conditions for the Ring Projects design teams to realize the Heat Transport Corridor over time.

Subsequently, Ingenium guided the various design teams of the 7 Ring Parks in integrating the reservation strip for these heat pipes into their designs.

Daarnaast voerde Ingenium een vervolgstudie uit voor de haalbaarheid van warmteproductie- en opslag voor het warmtenet binnen de historische SAMGA graanopslagsilo's, deel van het Ringpark Noordkasteel
