Marine barracks Bootsman-Jonsen in Ostend aspires to become first fossil-free barracks

Defense plans a large-scale renovation of barracks Bootsman-Jonsen in Ostend, one of our Navy's main training centers. The site will undergo a thorough renovation and refurbishment, to safeguard the quality of training and to make the site a lot more sustainable in one fell swoop. In this way, Defense is making its first steps toward a fossil-free barracks.

Connecting to heat grid

To fulfill this ambition, the barracks will connect to the Beauvent heat grid. This heat network will supply residual heat to the site. The choice of Defence to connect to the heat network and thus suddenly provide the site with sustainable heat is already a good step in the right direction. Defence was supported in drawing up the phasing of the connection. A plan was also provided to guarantee the continuity of the heat supply.

Master plan takes into account future changes

Source photo: portofoostende.be, Ingenium worked out the master plan for heat and electricity for this project. In such master plan, a long-term vision is elaborated in which phased investments in short- and long-term energy facilities are mapped out.

In this project, the planning of temporary connections, temporary boiler rooms, the space for them and the possible ways to reuse that space later were covered by the master plan.

The necessary steps for the electricity facilities were also worked out to allow for a phased conversion of the site. The master plan took into account the new and additional functions and facilities for the charging infrastructure. Connection, transformer cabins, routes and phased steps were defined. Finally, Defense was supported in estimating costs for the technologies within this master plan.

The Bijloke site in Ghent: Energetic transformation for a sustainable future

The Bijloke site in Ghent, steeped in rich history and diverse architecture, presents a unique challenge in the quest for a sustainable future. The diversity in use, ownership and age of the buildings on the site makes energy optimization and fossil-free heating a complex task. Nevertheless, the City of Ghent and Hogeschool Gent joined forces to draw up a well thought-out plan, with special attention to the historical context and heritage value of the buildings.
