IVAGO - heat grid study update

The City of Ghent wishes to update and expand IVAGO's study for waste heat valorization via heat grid based on more detailed info from potential heat consumers. The aim is to increase the interest and enthusiasm of the different stakeholders for a heat network connection.

Due to a number of changes in the environment of IVAGO, which include new routes, a revision of the feasibility study of the heat network is necessary. Ingenium and the City of Ghent also seized this opportunity to refocus the involvement of the various parties, mainly potential consumers of heat and/or steam. This feasibility study puts a strong focus on the nearby environment, where residual heat can be utilized the fastest. Quite a few surrounding companies use low-pressure steam in their production processes, which fits particularly well with the available waste heat from the waste incineration plant. The remaining residual heat can be further utilized by a heat grid, whether or not in cascade with the steam grid.

Ingenium and the City of Ghent put a strong focus on the added value of this story for the potential buyers of heat and looked for the different advantages of the companies for a connection ("What's in it for me?"). Ingenium made a further technical elaboration of the steam and heat network, identifying some specific technical requirements for the steam network and its components. Finally, Ingenium made a more detailed profitability exercise to map the potential price for heat and steam with greater certainty. Here we worked out dozens of scenarios to map as many leverage points as possible.
