Regina Mundi Genk

The Regina Mundi site is assigned a strategic function in strengthening the functional-spatial qualities of the city center. The interpretation of the site is aimed at developing new activities that strengthen the dynamism and liveliness of the city center, including evenings and weekends. They can have both a public and private character.

In doing so, the city of Genk wanted an approach to energy supply that fits into the "Genk 2030 climate plan."

More specifically, the ambition was to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 40% by 2030 and to aim for CO2 neutrality by 2050. Maximum use was also to be made of solar energy so as to maximize the potential at site level through energy sharing.

On the basis of a longlist of possible solutions, 2 technical concepts were put forward that can be rolled out in phases linked to the planned architectural renovations. Minimum insulation requirements were imposed on these renovations to make the technical concepts possible.

The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of following concepts was prepared:

- A low-temperature energy grid, with Cold/Heat Storage (ATES) as the energy source. (the desired scenario)

- Individual air-to-water heat pumps as a fallback scenario.

The results of the study were incorporated into a selection guide for a PPP.
