Electrification in the food industry under high voltage? Take the right steps with guidance

As in other industries, electrification in the food industry is a must, and in several areas. Ingenium offers various services to ensure that each intervention is targeted and cost-effective, while also not losing sight of the electricity supply system as a whole.

Business processes

A first aspect is the production process itself. We find that many food companies still operate on fossil fuels - with natural gas and/or natural gas-fired steam boilers - and are reluctant to switch to electricity. From our expertise, we can help raise awareness that CO2 reduction and fossil-free production are future-oriented choices. We do not intervene in the production process itself, but we ensure that all supplies for the new process are delivered to the end user, so that the electrical installations receive the necessary and appropriate upgrade.

Fleet

The electrification of food companies' vehicle fleets also often requires further steps. Many companies still have too few electric charging stations for passenger cars, and certainly in terms of charging infrastructure for trucks and vans - both from suppliers and for the company's own fleet - interventions are needed. Ingenium assists the company with feasibility studies, a master plan for the charging infrastructure, the effective engineering - and design of the installation from charging station to electric sign - and we also provide guidance in the execution of the works.

PV obligation

A third aspect is the obligation to install enough solar panels. Here, too, we relieve companies with feasibility studies, master plans, engineering and interconnection, and on-site supervision.

High voltage/utility connection up to standard?

When these 3 aspects of electrification are addressed separately, however, there is a danger of losing sight of the big picture. One often comes to the conclusion that the existing counter or high-voltage cabin is insufficient in size to accommodate all the projects together. Can the current connection be reinforced on the existing cable? Or should the connection be weighted in power, and also in primary voltage? Can the customer stay with Fluvius or should he switch to Elia? After an analysis, we provide the client with an overview of the possible options, each with the corresponding impact and cost. Once the customer has made a choice, we elaborate the plans in full in an engineering file, and then help find a contractor who will effectively carry out the works.
