Project in the spotlight: renovation of Schouwburg Kortrijk

The Schouwburg in Kortrijk is an important cultural hotspot, which is now undergoing a thorough renovation. Important architectural points of attention in the renovation and conversion are: accessibility, a new theater, sustainability and creativity with attention to heritage value.

Ingenium is designing the technical systems for this renovation and expansion of the city theater. The theater technical systems, mainly in the new theater hall but also in the existing building, are also being worked out and taken care of by our colleagues at TTAS theater construction.

Ventilation

It is only natural in these current, post-Covid, times to pay great attention to proper ventilation of the building. This with sufficiently high ventilation flow rates to ensure excellent air quality, but on the other hand also with energy recovery to do this in the most economical way possible.

New air groups will also be provided in the existing building and for the existing great hall to upgrade ventilation to contemporary "state of the art" standards.

Renewable energy

As much as possible, within budgetary constraints, renewable energy will be used.

On the one hand, the production of heat and cold is done via reversible air-water heat pumps, at least for the new construction volume, and the delivery systems are dimensioned for low-temperature heating in order to use the heat pumps as efficiently as possible.

On the other hand, as much of the roof as possible will be equipped with photovoltaic panels to generate part of the electricity demand itself. Eventually, the intention is to be able to heat the entire building without gas, and this is already taken into account in the current strategy and in the punctual modifications to the existing building.

Can heritage institutions also implement energy-saving measures?

Does the energy bill continue to be a pain point for you, too? This is also the case for collecting cultural heritage institutions. Due to the need for collection care, these institutions cannot always apply energy-saving measures. After all, different collection items have a "preferred climate. This preferred climate ensures that collection pieces can be well preserved for future generations.
