Project in the spotlight: "Carousel Agriculture" KU Leuven

In the "Carousel Agriculture" project, the laboratories and offices of the KU Leuven Agricultural Institute are being redesigned. This with a renewal of all techniques.

This takes place in 6 phases, whereby, according to a 'carousel', zones are freed up each time by moving departments to the already renovated parts. Ingenium stepped in from phase 2 for the complete design and follow-up of the execution of the technical systems. This part was already delivered in 2019.

The Agricultural Institute

The Agricultural Institute was built in 1937 near Cardinal Mercier Avenue in the southern part of Arenberg Park in Heverlee, which is protected as a village site. The Agricultural Institute (Art-Deco style) has been protected as a monument since 2010. The building serves as a research and teaching building for KU Leuven for the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, the Department of Microbial and Molecular Systems and the Department of Biosystems.

Phases

Phase 3 will be inaugurated in December. The works in this separate wing include 420 m² laboratories and 675 m² office, for a budget of 910,000 € technical installations. The entire ventilation, electrical installation, lab plumbing and special gases were renewed in the process. The pulse group was set up outside due to lack of space. The extraction group, coupled with the pulsie via glycol batteries, was placed inside. Since many laboratories contain devices with high heat output, additional recirculation groups with cooling batteries had to be puzzled into the whole. These then coupled, due to the high flow rates in small spaces, with textile ducts (air socks) as the end unit. The design also integrated 2 incubation chambers and a cold storage unit. A scissor elevator for transporting lab equipment and supplies was also integrated into the connection with building phase 4.

Construction site phase 4 will start in early 2022. At the same time, the design of phase 5 will also be started. Total budget techniques order €4,500,000 - €5,000,000.
