KMSKA reopens its doors after 11 years following comprehensive restoration and expansion

On Sept. 24, 2022, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts reopened its doors. The museum closed in 2011 for a comprehensive restoration and expansion. Ingenium assisted het facilitair bedrijf of the Flemish Government during the completion process.

Master Plan

One of the largest and most beautiful museums in Flanders underwent a thorough renovation and expansion. The old halls regained their renowned grandeur through a major refurbishment. All materials were maximally saved and carefully refurbished.
The expansion of the museum was not done in a classical way. Thus, no extension was used, but the four historic patios were transformed into ten contemporary rooms. This infill accounts for 40% more exhibition space.

Stable climate

The museum was also equipped with brand new technical installations. Temperature and humidity are very important factors in preserving the works of art. Rubens likes it not too cold, not too hot, not too dry, not too humid. If not, he cannot be admired by future generations. Therefore, a high-quality ASHRAE Class A climate control system was chosen during the restoration.

Setting up this climate control system is no sinecure. Het facilitair bedrijf of the Flemish Government was assisted in this by Ingenium. The climate system was tested for a year so that the museum could maintain its stability during each season. During those first months, Ingenium continuously monitored the systems via the building management system and made adjustments where necessary.

Maintenance

Such complicated installations require very specific maintenance. For this, the museum was guided by Ingenium in choosing the right maintenance firm. This is done by drawing up maintenance and management plans with strict conditions and SLAs (Service Level Agreement). The correct execution of the maintenance is also further monitored by Ingenium during monthly follow-up meetings.
